[MUSIC] The 54th Grammy Awards – Winners
February 16, 2012
The 54th Grammy Awards took place on February 13, 2012 and as everyone knew, Adele cleaned out with 5 Grammys, which includes Album of the Year for 21. There were also other big winners that night as well. The Foo Fighters cleaned out the Rock category, while Kanye West dominated in taking home all the awards in the Rap category for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, All Of The Lights, and Otis with Jay-Z. Skrillex won big with his album, Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites in the Electronic Dance category. Big night for Bon Iver, as he beat out J Cole and Nicki Minaj for Best New Artist, and taking an award for Best Alternative Album. It was also a fantastic night for Toronto’s own, Melanie Fiona, as she took home 2 Grammys for her record ‘Fool For You’ with Cee Lo Green.
But the night was also about honouring musical legends that have passed away this year. LL Cool J started the show by saying a prayer for Whitney Houston, who passed away the night before the Grammys. Jennifer Hudson did a fantastic job in singing ‘I Will Always Love You’ as a tribute to the late diva. Hudson definitely did Houston proud. Alicia Keys teamed up with Bonnie Raitt and covered Etta James’ record, ‘A Sunday Kind Of Love’.
The performances of the night were ok, nothing spectacular. Adele had the best performance though. She performed ‘Rolling In The Deep’, and this was her first time singing live since her vocal cord surgery. Nicki Minaj performed her brand new track, ‘Roman Holiday’ and I found it to be a disaster. Coldplay and Rihanna performed their duet ‘Princess In Paris’. Rihanna sounded a little off, but nonetheless, it’s my favourite track!
